Storage tips
Squirrel's tips for self storage are here.
- Fill all storage boxes completely so that they don’t collapse when you stack them up
- Always pack heavier items into smaller boxes to make them easy to handle
- Place lighter boxes on top of heavier ones
- Put items that you will need regular access to at the front of the unit so that you don’t have to lift everything out of the unit to get to them
- Write on the outside of the box what is in there as you pack it to help you find stuff more easily in the future
- Make a list of what you are putting into storage as it is easy to forget what is in there
- Estimate the value of the items you are putting into storage as this will be helpful when deciding how much to insure your belongings for
- If you are storing mattresses or sofas for an extended period you should cover them with dust sheets
- Defrost fridges and freezers fully well in advance and then ensure that the doors are left ajar when they are in storage
- Any fuel must be emptied out of items like lawn mowers before they are put into storage
